Your Responsibilities

As a member of the Core Systems Maintenance team, the Electrical & Instrumentation Journeyperson combines the expertise of each trade to maintain and enhance the site's electrical assets, infrastructure, and industrial automation & control systems. This position involves a broad scope of responsibilities, including the upkeep and servicing of Medium and Low voltage assets, field and shop repairs of instrumentation devices, and providing essential support in the commissioning, startup, and operations of various site projects throughout the Bethune mine.

The role will carry out regular diagnostic activities to ensure optimal performance and reliability of both electrical and instrumentation systems. This includes conducting both preventative and corrective maintenance tasks, overseeing contractor assignments related to the plant's electrical and automation systems, and actively supporting the commissioning and operational phases of industrial automation and control systems. This role demands a proactive approach to maintenance, a keen eye for detail in troubleshooting, and a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize advanced testing devices to inspect and diagnose operational issues within electrical & instrumentation devices, identifying faults efficiently during routine maintenance checks and inspections. Provide detailed feedback on preventative maintenance and corrective work activities.

  • Perform troubleshooting and repairs on a wide range of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems & assets, including essential maintenance on protective relays, metering, and control systems integral to gas turbines and generators.

  • Install and maintain critical process control instrumentation, such as transmitters, controllers, analyzers, and valves, ensuring precise calibration and optimal performance.

  • Engage in mechanical repairs and modifications, adeptly managing the installation and adjustment of small piping and tubing components.

  • Rebuild, calibrate and adjust both electrical & instrumentation devices such as transmitters, control valves, relays, and VFDs to guarantee equipment operates at peak efficiency.

  • Collaborate with operational staff and Reliability personnel to maintain consistent and stable equipment performance, supporting the development of specifications for instrumentation and standards for control systems, instrumentation application, and maintenance guidelines.

  • Coordinate with contractors to facilitate both minor and major maintenance shutdowns, assisting in the design, testing, quality assurance, commissioning, and start-up of instrumentation and control systems.

  • Aid in diagnosing and resolving system malfunctions, process disturbances, and provide advice on technical issues, offering practical support to the Commissioning and Start-up Team with equipment setups.

  • Execute all maintenance and service activities in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulations, the site's Electrical Safety Plan, the Canadian Electrical Code, Environmental Standards, Company Policies, and KSPC Electrical Safe Work Practices and Procedures.

  • Ensure completion and proper preparation of necessary Permits, Hazard Assessments, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Isolation documentation, and ensure safe approaches are utilized to minimize the level of risk before beginning work.

  • Engage in creating and executing lock-out/tag-out procedures and electrical Switching Plans, contributing to the continual improvement of safety and operational procedures.

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures closely, submitting suggestions for improvements and modifications when necessary, and provide guidance to ensure work instructions (WI’s) are accurate and up to date.

  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance, diligently completing necessary reports to uphold system reliability and adhere to safety standards. Leverages preventive maintenance findings to proactively address potential system vulnerabilities, fostering an environment of continuous operational improvement.

  • Take part in training sessions led by vendors, attend external workshops, and actively contribute to safety committees, sharing insights and feedback derived from maintenance duties and experiences.

Requirements

Your Profile

  • Certification as both an Electrical Interprovincial Journeyperson and Instrumentation Interprovincial Journeyperson is required.

  • 3-5 years of experience in Industrial Electrical Maintenance and/or Instrumentation within the mining or manufacturing sectors.

Additional Skills:

  • Proficiency in handling low and medium voltage Variable.

  • Frequency Drives (VFDs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and familiarity with Rockwell & ABB products/software.

  • Skilled in switching medium and high voltage systems and a strong mechanical aptitude and background would be considered an asset.

  • Familiarity with ABB 800xa Control System & Profibus communication protocol would be considered an asset.

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and generate detailed technical documentation, reports, and methodologies.

  • Employs judgement in managing, organizing, and fulfilling tasks within established boundaries, with a focus on adaptability and resilience in changing circumstances.

  • Proactively identifies and mitigates potential risks, is proficient in diagnosing and resolving issues as they occur and demonstrates the ability to interpret data to derive meaningful conclusions.

  • Applies logical and reasoned thinking to everyday problems, influences team members to meet quality control and safety standards, and works with a strong safety orientation.

  • Provides training and support to less experienced colleagues, ensuring that procedures are both current and accurate, and overseeing the quality of team members' work to maintain high standards.

This position will be required to participate in a rotating shift schedule which may include days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and a rotating on-call schedule.
