Magnesium sulphate anhydrous and epsom salt are used as cost-effective production accessories and unproblematic coagulants in the production of thermoplastics such as ABS plastics (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), which are used worldwide. The big advantage is the lower corrosion level compared to other salts.
Magnesium sulphate anhydrous is used as a mild desiccant for organic solvents in chemical laboratories.
During the chlorine-alkali electrolysis process, salt (sodium chloride - NaCl) is separated into its components chlorine and sodium. The sodium part is further processed in various derivatives, for example as soda lye or caustic soda, as well as sodium hypochlorite. Chlorine is used in many applications. Its largest application area is the manufacturing of plastics such as polyvinylchloride (PVC), polycarbonate, or as intermediate product isocyanate (MDI) in polyurethane synthesis. Due to its low content of secondary components, potassium chloride produced by K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH is well suited for chlor-alkali electrolysis (classic amalgam and membrane process). It is used successfully in the production of potassium hydroxide all over the world.
Potassium chloride is used as a conducting salt in weaker acidic solutions for electro-galvanizing. This helps to achieve higher voltage, thereby reducing the immersion time of the galvanized parts.
Potassium salts play an important role in metallurgic processes. Potassium chlorides are used for surface treatment and galvanizing, as hardening and soldering salts, and as smelting salts and drossing fluxes in foundry chemistry. Industrial rock salts are essential materials in industrial for the metal processing industry.
Potassium chlorides are used as additives in water-based drilling fluids. Mainly used as shale inhibitors, these high-performance additives ensure maximum lubrication and the greatest possible borehole stability. Industrial salt is an important element in drilling fluids primarily used in the exploration and extraction of crude oil and natural gas. The use of industrial salt is suitable for the stabilization of the borehole as well as the lubrication and cooling of the drilling head. In the refining process of petroleum products - e.g. in the Merox process - industrial salt is applied in the filtration of the final product.
Potassium compounds such as potassium chloride are used in the manufacturing of dyes and pigments. Moreover, potassium sulphate is one of the components used for cyan pigments, mainly for adapting color depth.
Potassium sulphate serves as a raw material for the manufacture of potassium peroxodisulphate in electrolytic processes. Potassium peroxodisulphate is used as an initiator for polymerisations in emulsions or in solutions.
Magnesium sulphate anhydrous and epsom salt have proven to be beneficial in the production of pulp. As stabilizers they prevent browning. Both products have also shown their effectiveness in the subsequent refinement procedure, so-called alkaline bleaching.

As an ingredient of heavy-duty detergents, magnesium sulphate leads to a gentle effect on the fibers and a non-polluting effect on waste water. Magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride solutions are used in liquid soaps, detergents and rinsing agents to control viscosity. Industrial salt is the basic material for detergent processing.
Hides alt is suitable for the traditional preservation and preparation of cattle, calf and pig skins as well as sheep skins. The fresh hides are dehydrated through the use of hide salt. The salt has an antibacterial effect and protects the animal products from decay. These properties increase the shelf life of the hides and at the same time prepare them optimally for the tanning process. Magnesium sulphate prevents leather from drying out and makes it more supple. It also promotes the binding of tanning agents. For these reasons, it is used as an auxiliary in the production of high-quality leather.
In the textile industry, industrial salt is used as dye enhancer in the processing and refining of fabrics, such as cotton or linen. When used in a dye bath, salt ensures that the color fully penetrates the fabric, while improving its adhesion to the fiber. Magnesium sulphate anhydrous is essential in the high-grade finishing of textiles. Their catalytic effect is necessary for the production of non-iron textile materials.
Magnesium sulphate anhydrous, epsom salt, potassium chloride and potassium sulphate are used as micronutrients in biotechnological procedures. Typical areas of application are yeast production as well as fermentation reactions for the production of proteins, enzymes, ethanol, vitamins, etc.
