Salt from the deep
K+S's de-icing salt mostly comes from rock salt deposits that were formed about 230 million years ago as a result of the evaporation of ancient oceans.

In several rock salt mines in Europa, K+S mines salts at depths of several hundred meters.
DownloadNatural minerals for plants
K+S produces the fertilizer potassium chloride in conventional mining in Germany and in solution mining in Canada.

The loaders transport up to 17 tonnes of crude salt underground in the K+S mines.
DownloadAnchors keep the mine safe
The ridge anchor drill rig is used to place 1.2 meter long threaded rods in the ceilings of the mine in order to fasten the salt layers together.

Solution mining in Canada involves pumping water deep down through pipes, dissolving the salt rock in huge caverns and then pumping it back up again.

Traveling west with 13,000 horsepower
Huge freight trains transport the potassium chloride about 1,800km from the Canadian Bethune plant through the Rocky Mountains to the port facility in Vancouver.

At the port facility in Vancouver, potassium chloride is loaded onto an Ultramax Bulk Carrier and then shipped to Brazil.
