More needed than ever

K+S partner Elixir starts construction phase of a European production facility for water-soluble tMAP 12-61. The project reduces risks of supply disruptions for Europe.

Quality

European quality with expected Service

Almost a year after signing the contract, the starting signal has been given: K+S and the Elixir Group have jointly held the groundbreaking ceremony for the production of 50,000 tons of technical monoammonium phosphate 12-61 (tMAP) per year. After an 18-month planning phase, a new production facility is being built in the Serbian chemical park Prahovo (ICP), near the borders with Romania and Bulgaria.

Elixir, a producer of regular and high-purity phosphoric acid, is working closely with K+S. Phosphoric acid and tMAP production are closely linked, which is not only sustainable in terms of the circular economy, but also guarantees a high-quality product.

K+S will market fully water-soluble tMAP under its soluMAP® brand in Europe, expanding its portfolio of potash and magnesium products.

Prevent volatility thanks to logistically beneficial production site

Europe currently imports aound 80% of its phosphate demand in fertigation from China (Source: Argus Media). There, tMAP and its precursors are used as raw materials for battery production. It is already becoming apparent that availability is becoming scarce as a result. In addition, immense delays due to inspection times, customs duties and handling costs at the port of destination are presenting customers with major challenges.

The European market for fertigation is highly dependent on Chinese imports of tMAP. These are affected by volatile export restrictions and delivery times of several months. With product from Europe, we will be able to offer our customers a lucrative and reliable alternative.

Know why: LFP batteries and tMAP

LFP batteries (lithium iron phosphate batteries) are a type of lithium-ion battery that are mostly used in electric vehicles and energy storage. In contrast to other battery technologies, LFP batteries are known for their longevity and relatively low production costs. A key component in the production of LFP batteries is iron phosphate, which is produced using phosphate sources such as purified phosphoric acid or tMAP. tMAP plays an important role as an alternative phosphate source and contributes to the production of the cathode material, which is crucial for the performance of the battery. Most of the production and further processing of LFP batteries and their raw materials currently takes place in China, which will influence global supply. It is assumed that the demand for high-purity phosphates will increase significantly.

Short delivery times with the same high level of service by K+S are essential for the successful production and distribution of water-soluble fertilizers. K+S guarantees this through its central location and existing logistics network in Central Europe. Thanks to its location on the second largest river in Europe, the Danube, the Prahovo site itself has very good access to the important application markets. Within a few days, customers can expect product supplied via truck in Europe and Turkey.
