Dombasle-sur-Meurthe at a glance
At the salt plant in Dombasle, the K+S Group processes about 200,000 tonnes of various evaporated salt products, for example into high-purity pharmaceutical salt and into the well-known AXAL® salt tablets for water softening. Some of the salt produced is transported to the Cérébos salt plant, where it is further processed into consumer products for the French market.

K+S France site Cérébos
The somewhat older site is the present K+S France site Cérébos plant, founded in 1866 as the "Botta à Dombasle" by decree of Napoleon III. In the beginning, an underground brine deposit was used to produce its own salt using the pan-boiling process. Since 1964, however, Saline Cérébos has exclusively been manufacturing consumer products and supplying the salt for them - and the majority of the salt supplied comes from the neighboring evaporated salt factory. At the site, about 70 employees process about 3 to 35,000 tonnes of salt annually - including for the popular table salt brand Cérébos®, which is well-known in France and has been in existence since 1902.
In 2016, the Saline Cérébos , rich in tradition, celebrated its 150th anniversary with numerous campaigns both for employees and for the public.
The history of the somewhat younger saline and evaporated salt factory begins in 1873, when the Solvay company settled in Dombasle-sur-Meurthe, industrialised the traditional rock salt production in Lorraine and converted it to salt production. Fresh water is fed under pressure into a salt dome, the salt is dissolved and brought to the surface as saturated brine, where it is further processed.
